We are happy to share that the first fully electric and zero-emission fast Ferry, MS Medstraum, won the Ship of the Year 2022 award. Servogear is proud to have been a part of this project through supplying the propulsion system.
The Jury’s Verdict, from Skipsrevyen:
“Once again, Skipsrevyen's readers and jury will honour a shipping company, a shipyard and designers for setting a new standard in low emission technology. In recent years, propulsion systems in new ships have become increasingly technologically advanced, leading to reduced consumption of fossil fuels and thus reduced emissions of greenhouse gases”.
The propulsion system onboard Medstraum is based on the standard Servogear Ecoflow solution; HD 220 E gear with associated axle, rudder, brackets and the unique electric-flow propeller. Through further optimizations focusing on achieving a close interaction between the hull and propulsion solutions and reducing the weight on several components, MS Medstraum achieved results that have never been accomplished on a catamaran hull before.
“For the first time in our history, we have also supplied brackets in carbon fibre instead of stainless steel or brass. This change alone has saved several hundred kilos,” - Bjørn Sturle Hillestad, Sales & Marketing Director in Servogear.
After working on this project for several years, we are pleased to finally see it sailing around in the port of Stavanger. To Servogear, the ship represents that boundaries are there to be broken and that with close and good cooperation even the highest of goals can be reached.
